The complex “antagonists” of Last Airbender and Legend of Korra are always so fascinating and just capture your heart. I particularly love the similarities between these two: normal early childhood, both extremely talented, controlling messed up father, grew up with corrupted ways of thinking, given high expectations, genius manipulations of allies and enemies, and finally the tragic demise revealing that maybe they’re not as villainous as we all thought them to be.
They were prodigies, put on a pedestal by their fathers but deemed monsters by society and those around them. Are they really clever or just misunderstood?
Azula’s hidden insecurities and longings for love despite her obvious power and control led to her sad deterioration. Similarly, (although it was not as clear in the show as Azula’s story, so this is mostly assumption) Noatok’s deeply ingrained power philosophies that deemed failure unacceptable and bottled dispair for his childhood and relationship with his brother caused him to just give up.
I’d like to think that Aang’s statement to Korra at the end of the finale applies to these two as much as it did for both Avatars. Although, the effect for them is not as positive.
